With the unpredictable weather in Utah, sometimes you just need some go-to activities that keep kids interested during recess time. But the cost can be a barrier and so Horizon Elementary Fifth Grade Teacher Jaymie Cushing needed some funding from Murray Education Foundation (MEF) to overcome that.

Her grant submission awarded her the money she needed to purchase multiple indoor games and activities for her classroom. The kids have loved them and they’ve been a much better alternative than videos or more Chromebook time.

After years of dealing with tangled, shorted, and cut cords, McMillan Elementary First Grade Teachers Ms. Evans and Ms. Jessop were fit to be tied. So, they each submitted grant funding requests to Murray Education Foundation to go wireless with their classroom headphones.

Before this Bluetooth solution, students would unintentionally move away from their desks while still tethered to their Chromebooks which led to damaged computers and cords. But a cool feature of the new headphones is built-in microphone technology.  So, students can record themselves reading and these teachers are able to give them more 1:1 support on their skills.

MCSD is proud of our teachers for embracing technology that improves student learning. Even simple things we all take for granted come with a cost when you must buy one for each student. This source of MEF funding is an important supplement in our community when others are exhausted.

This year, Riverview Junior High Math teacher Haley Johnson has utilized grant funding from Murray Education Foundation (MEF) to task her students to mix logic with creativity through a monthly “Lego Challenge.” The entire school votes on the best builds and the winners get to build their own LEGO minifigure and honors for their efforts.

She’s also incorporating solo build time, giving students individual sets to free-build and explore their creativity further. Students thrive when given challenges and opportunities to express and explore ideas – regardless of the subject. These are great life skills and prepare them for a world that is waiting with anticipation for what Murray students have to offer.

Longview Elementary Second Grade Teachers Paige Clark and Trina Evans were frustrated with all the jumbled-up and broken headphone cords they were dealing with. In fact, too much of their time was wasted on resolving these entanglements.

Thankfully, there was a solution in the form of Murray Education Foundation teacher grants. Through a simple request, Paige and Trina were able to acquire funding to purchase better-quality headphones. Now they and their students are spending more time learning and dealing with fewer annoying barriers to learning.

Sometimes the small and simple things can make a huge difference in learning. Even though the grants are small, they are powerful tools for teachers to make an audible difference in student growth.

Always looking for ways to expand and optimize student learning in the nail technician program, MHS teacher Dixie Davis wanted to grow her collection of colors for their new dip systems. But each color is costly and just wasn’t in the budget.

So, she submitted a grant funding request from Murray Education Foundation (MEF) and is so grateful she got the funding she needed. Now her students have 25 additional color offerings to practice with and for customers they serve. And because they last a long time, this will benefit her classes for years to come.

Public Education funding is limited in Utah, but thanks to MEF and other opportunities, Murray has the tools we need to provide enriching experiences for students.

Longview Elementary First Grade Teacher Tracy Findlay wanted to give her students more visual ways to learn math. So she requested grant funding from MEF to obtain math stacker blocks and number bars for whole and small groupings. These materials help students learn part, whole, and equal equations, compare numbers, and even for measuring with.

These versatile tools give kids a more visual approach to their math problems, making learning easier and more fun. She says it’s fun to see their excitement when they challenge themselves and expand on their mathematical thinking.
